The Import Export Code (IEC) is a prerequisite for any business engaging in international trade of commodities or provision of services. Due to the fact that only one IE Code can be issued per PAN number by the Director General of Foreign Trade, this registration system is strictly pan-based.
A valid PAN, GSTIN, and bank current account are required for an IE Code application. After an application and supporting documentation have been filed to the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industries, the applicant will be issued an IE Code.
Once you register an IE Code, it is yours for life. Because of this, maintaining an active IE Code registration is not necessary. This registration is a one-time thing that won’t need to be renewed or examined.
Entities Exempted From Registration of IE Code:
1. No IE Code is needed for Central Government or agency imports or exports. Those on the Foreign Trade (Exemption from the implementation of Rules in certain instances) Order, 1993 exempt list are also not required to register with the IE Code.
2. Personal imports and exports are exempt from the IE Code.

Import Export Code Issuance:
The IEC can be printed off for your records after you submit your online application, fees, and supporting materials. A combination of letters and numbers, IEC consists of ten characters.
Despite the fact that the IE Code is generated automatically, the Regional Authority would conduct post-verification of the online IEC in accordance with the guidelines, and if any incorrect or incomplete information was provided, the applicant would be subject to penal or criminal action, and the IEC would be suspended or cancelled.
RCMC Registration:
A Registration Cum Membership Certificate (RCMC) is given by the Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO) and one of the various Export Promotion Councils (EPC) or Commodity Boards. These are mostly agencies and organizations that work to promote and develop export businesses and are authorized to do so by the Government of India. It is a membership certificate that is good for five years and shows that the person holding the certificate is registered with FIEO or Commodity Board. When applying for an RCMC, the applicant has to say what their main business is, and having an RCMC gives an exporter all the benefits and advantages of the parent organization.
