Cristiano Ronaldo in tears after Portugal’s Nations League victory – WATCH

Cristiano Ronaldo shed tears of joy as Portugal secured a memorable UEFA Nations League victory, defeating Spain 5-3 via penalty shootout in the final on Sunday.

This triumph marked another proud chapter in his illustrious international career, adding to the Euro 2016 title. Ronaldo, who scored to help Portugal level terms with Spain 2-2 in the final, broke down soon after the winning penalty.

“I have many titles with my clubs, but nothing is better than winning for Portugal,” Ronaldo said. “These are tears. It’s mission accomplished and so much joy.”

The 40-year-old football superstar emerged first during the pre-match warmup, eliciting thunderous cheers from Portuguese fans, with numerous spectators sporting jerseys displaying his name.

His presence on the field prompted spectators to capture moments of the football icon on their mobile phones while they had the opportunity to witness him perform. Ronaldo acknowledged on Saturday that his playing career would eventually come to an end.

Mendes levelled terms for Portugal following Zubimendi’s opener for Spain, before Oyarzabal secured a 2-1 advantage for Spain heading into halftime.

Ronaldo demonstrated perfect positioning to slot home the equaliser from Mendes’ cross in the 61st minute, sparking celebrations among his supporters.

The goal marked Ronaldo’s 138th strike for Portugal, establishing him as the highest international goal-scorer of all time for the country.

Despite continued efforts in what was his 221st national team appearance, a visibly tired Ronaldo left the pitch in the 88th minute to thunderous applause from the crowd.

Ronaldo’s next career move remains unclear, with his Al-Nassr contract set to expire at the end of June. Following the club’s final Saudi Pro League match, he shared ‘this chapter is over’ on social media.

He also said on Saturday that he is not going to play the upcoming Club World Cup despite getting offers from various clubs participating in the tournament.
