22 Aug Modi slams INDIA bloc for opposing jail-resignation bill, warns of infiltration altering Bihar’s demography
Modi alleged that the Opposition is against measures to check crime and corruption in politics and is being soft on infiltration, which he claimed is changing the demographic profile of Bihar, where Assembly polls are due this year.
Addressing a rally in Gayaji, Modi referred to the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, which was introduced by the government in Parliament earlier this week. The Opposition members had torn copies of the proposed legislation and raised slogans against home minister Amit Shah in both Houses.
“We have seen a regrettable situation in which people in seats of power have been running governments from jail, signing files from behind bars, tearing to shreds constitutional propriety,” Modi said. Congress, AAP and TMC members were at the forefront in opposing the bill.
Former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal had continued to function from his post for weeks when he was in jail in a graft case. Tamil Nadu minister V Senthil Balaji was directed by the Supreme Court to quit after he got bail in a cash-for-job case.
RJD leaders Lalu Prasad, Misa Bharti and Tejaswi Yadav are facing charges of corruption.”We decided to bring in a law that provides for dismissing a corrupt chief minister, or even the prime minister, if he or she spends 30 days in jail. A lowly clerk, if he is jailed for a short period, is placed under suspension. But when we brought a stringent law, RJD, Congress and the Left parties were furious,” Modi said. “They are angry because they are scared of facing punishment for their sins.”The prime minister alleged that both Congress and the RJD, which are allies in Bihar, have filled their coffers with people’s money, which caused delays in projects.Modi alleged that demographic profile of Bihar is also changing due to infiltrators from across the border. “There is one more threat, that of infiltrators, which our country faces,” Modi said. “I mentioned it in my Independence Day speech. They cannot be allowed to eat into the resources of our country. I have, therefore, called for a demography mission. But the Congress and the RJD want to protect these infiltrators for the sake of vote bank politics.”
Modi’s remarks come at a time when Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, and Tejaswi Yadav are taking out a ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ in Bihar.
Modi alleged that Congress has always been insensitive towards Bihar. The prime minister also recalled his pledge to avenge the Pahalgam terror attack.
