At least 11 injured in mass stabbing at Michigan Walmart; Suspect in custody

At least 11 people were hospitalized following a stabbing incident Saturday(July 26) afternoon at a Walmart store in Traverse City, northern Michigan. A suspect is in custody, and authorities say the investigation remains active as federal and state agencies assist local law enforcement. Traverse City, located about 140 miles northwest of Grand Rapids, is a popular summer destination situated on Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay.

The Michigan State Police confirmed the stabbing occurred at the Walmart Supercenter on US-31 South in Traverse City, a lakeside town known more for its cherry orchards than violent crime. The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation.

According to Munson Medical Center, all 11 victims are currently being treated for stab-related injuries. Hospital spokesperson Catherine Dewey said staff were working closely with emergency responders and police to assess the severity of the victims’ conditions.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as the attack unfolded inside the store, with reports suggesting the incident began near the pharmacy section.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is involved in the case, with Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirming agents are on the ground assisting with forensics and background checks. The suspect’s identity and motive have not yet been released.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer responded to the news on Saturday night, calling it a “horrible event” and assuring that the state is coordinating with local officials. “Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and the entire Traverse City community,” her office said in a statement.A spokesperson for Walmart said the company is fully cooperating with investigators. “We are deeply saddened by what happened at our Traverse City store and are working with local authorities,” the company said. They deferred further questions to law enforcement.Officials have asked the public to avoid the area as the crime scene remains active. As of now, police have not confirmed reports of additional victims or whether more than one suspect was involved.
